Loch Garman (Irish for Wexford) is the sweetest place in Ireland. Known for its brilliant strawberries, Wexford was founded in 1210 A.D. by Dames. County Wexford is located in the Leinster province with Wexford Town as its capital. A beautiful coastal county on the southeastern side of Ireland, County Wexford is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the Irish culture.

 

While studying abroad, I had the privilege of staying and studying in Wexford Town. While staying in Wexford, my accommodations was the Talbots Suites and my stay was wonderful. My favorite place in Wexford was a lovely pub called The Sky and The Ground or what my friends and I liked to call it “The Sky.” The Sky is so homey feeling but has a very hippy vibe to it. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays, we got to listen to traditional trad music which always almost brought me to tears due to its beauty. Also, The Sky was a wonderful place to interact with locals and learn about the history of Ireland and Irish culture. I already miss The Sky so much and wish I could go back with all of my lads.

 

Wexford is rich in history especially history on the Irish Famine. County Wexford is home to New Ross, Ireland where the famous immigrant ship, Dunbroady set sail for Savannah, Georgia. Thousands of Irish bought their ticket to a better life during the famine by setting sail on the Dunbroady out of New Ross towards the Americas. New Ross also has a very large American presence, and this is due to John F. Kennedy’s family being from New Ross. There is a statue of JFK and memorabilia all over New Ross in honor of the Kennedy family.

 

Georgia Southern campus in Wexford, Ireland is located in the county’s old courthouse, and in years to come the accommodations for students will be held in an old nunnery. Although small, the GSU campus in Wexford is beautiful and you get a wonderful walk through the main town area on your walk to campus. I will miss seeing the bustling shops on my way to class and the school children stopping into shops to get a bite to eat before returning back to school.

 

The food in Wexford was amazing. From the hole in the wall Chinese restaurant to the Michelin star restaurant, Wexford has everything. Some of my favorite places to eat were Stable Diet, La Cote, The Red Elephant, Wexford Coffee Roasters, and CDMX. Wexford is a quiet town, but it is filled with joy and great energy at the same time. Wexford will forever hold a very special place in my heart.
